Stone Brewing Announces New CEO

After announcing last year that they were looking for a new CEO, Stone Brewing Company yesterday made the announcement that they have selected a new CEO to run the seminal California craft brewery.

Stone chose Dominic Engels who had previously worked as the President of POM Wonderful and also held other positions at The Wonderful Company over the past decade including Vice President of Wonderful Pistachios. Engels has surprisingly  never worked in the beer industry prior to his new position at Stone. According to his LinkedIn he also previously served as Managing Director for The Wonderful Company in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as Director of Strategic Store Operations for Gap Inc.

If you are asking yourself what will become of Stone’s long-time CEO and outspoken face of the company Greg Koch, he announced previously (back in September 2015 on Youtube) that he would be transitioning to the new role of Executive Chairman of Stone Brewing Company, which will have less of a focus on day to day operations.

This comes at a time of massive continued growth and expansion for Stone. They’ve been working to build their new facilities in Virginia and Berlin and also just celebrated their 20th anniversary. Back in May, Stone also announced that they will be starting a new craft beer investment company called True Craft, backed by an initial $100 million dollar investment from an as of yet undisclosed investor.

It’s clear that Stone shows no signs of slowing down even after growing exponentially as a company over the years. It’s also refreshing that they have never once deterred from their steadfast values as a craft brewery amid so many other large and medium sized craft brands selling out to big beer. It remains to be seen how the hiring of Engels will impact Stone’s strong adherence to their brand identity, but despite their many changes as a company over the years Stone has still managed to remain uniquely Stone and hopefully that will continue.
